Home decor fabrics are an important part of decorating, from sofas and chairs to headboards and sheets to decorative items like cushions, blankets and tablecloths. Natural fabrics are made from natural fibers, usually from animal or plant sources.
Synthetic fabrics are made using chemical processes and synthetic fibers. Synthetic fabrics tend to be stronger and more durable than natural fabrics. However, their production is harmful to the environment. Because of the chemicals they contain, they can also be harmful to children or people with conditions such as skin allergies. There are quite a few fabrics made from blends of natural and synthetic fibers, both of which offer two advantages.
While there is no hard and fast rule about which fabric to use, certain properties of textiles make it more suitable for a variety of fields. Upholstery in heavy-use areas such as dining chairs, sofas, and headboards requires a heavier, thicker fabric to withstand daily use, accidental spills, and wear and tear. Delicate fabrics like silk can be used on sofas, but are more suitable for those that are not used very often.
Medium weight and sheer fabrics are more suitable for decorative items such as curtains or cushions. Also, keep in mind climatic conditions like humidity. Homes with small children and/or pets need durable and easy-to-clean fabrics for upholstery and curtains.
